Presidential Candidate Tracker - Oct. 29th Update
- Posted: October 29, 2008
- Categories: National Popular Vote, FairVote
In the eight weeks since the Republican convention, the major party candidates for president and vice-president have devoted 99% of their campaign visits to 17 states and 81% of their campaign visits to only ten states: Ohio, Pennsylvania, Florida, Virginia, Colorado, Michigan, Missouri, New York, Wisconsin, and North Carolina. With the exception of New York, these ten most-visited states are heavily contested battleground states with relatively large populations. This stockpiling of campaign attention into a handful of states is a direct consequence of the current Electoral College system. That system is governed by state statutes that by 2012 may be replaced by the National Popular Vote plan for president where every vote will be of equal weight wherever it is cast.

Boosted by the work of David Schnicke and Laura Kirshner, FairVote’s new “campaign trackers” for presidential campaign visits and advertisement spending has garnered significant media attention.

With two weeks to go, presidential candidates spoil six lucky states
- Posted: October 22, 2008

After nearly two years of campaigning, the 2008 presidential election will be over in just 13 days. For voters in most states, they won't see the candidates between now and Election Day nor experience campaign activity generated by the presidential campaigns. They will be voyeurs to the "real action" taking place in an ever-shrinking number of presidential battlegrounds.

October 17th Update on Presidential Visits and Spending
- Posted: October 17, 2008
- Categories: National Popular Vote, FairVote
With three weeks to go until Election Day, the Presidential candidates are narrowing down the list of states where they are focusing resources and time; and, in what should be no surprise, Ohio is now the most-visited state, and Florida and Pennsylvania lead the pack the campaign ad spending. Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania were also the three most important states in 2004, when the conventional wisdom-- and ultimately correct assessment -- was that the candidate winning at least two of those states would take the White House.
